We call the septum, which consists of cartilage and bone pieces that divide the nostril into two and extend into the nose. The curvature of the septum, I mean the deviation of the septum, is a situation we frequently observe in the society.
If there are conditions such as difficulty in breathing through the nose, bleeding in the nose, headache, mouth breathing due to inability to breathe easily through the nose, snoring, sinusitis that do not improve, found in patients we perform septum deviation surgery. However, the curvature in the septum may not always cause these complaints. In such cases, I mean absence of symptoms, we do not need to perform surgery. Septum deviation surgery is also called septoplasty / submucosal resection (SMR).
Patients considering deviation surgery, if they want to have aesthetic nose surgery, too; the most convenient is to do both. Because in aesthetic surgeries, septum cartilage is used as a material for shaping the outer part of the nose.
Septum deviation is generally accompanied by swelling (turbinate hypertrophy) of meat in the nose. There can be even concha hypertrophy on the side where there is no curvature in general. For this reason, it is necessary to intervene to the concha hypertrophy during septoplasty, too. It is the most commonly used technique to shrink the nasal meats without cutting the radiofrequency method.
Septum deviation surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes. Patients are often kept under observation overnight. After the operation, a silicone tampon can be inserted according to the condition of the nose and this tampon is taken painlessly in the next day. After the operation, patients try to keep the nose open with salt water and moisturizer. In this period, the surgeon continues to see the patient periodically and clean the nose until the inside of the nose is completely opened.
