Otoplasty (Prominent Ear Surgery)

Prominent ear is when the ear is placed at an angle more than normal to the skull and the situation of auricle bends forward. The increase in this angle is caused by disorders in various structures of the ear. Prominent ear is an important psychosocial problem in childhood. Although the child's appearance seems sweet to adults, other children can make fun of it. This can lead to mental and psychological conditions, such as the urge to hide the ear in a child with a prominent (in other words protruding) ear.

Various techniques are available for prominent ear correction. Although the technique made with rope can give results in certain disorders, but it does not work in every ear. We mostly prefer the method of making an incision from behind the ear, shaping the cartilage and fixing them with insoluble threads. We use absorbable stitches.

Ear development is completed at an average of 6 years old. For this reason, prominent ear surgery (otoplasty) can be performed from the age of 6. For the psychological reasons we mentioned above, we recommend the surgery in the preschool period. General anesthesia in children and local anesthesia in adults can be performed. We recommend using an elastic bandage for 2 days after the operation and a bandana for 2 weeks afterwards.
