Septum Perforation

The cartilage and bone structure that divides the nostrils into two is called the septum. Perforation may occur in the septum for certain reasons, in this case, the perforation operation is performed. Today, the biggest cause of septum perforations is previous nasal surgeries. Apart from this, there are many etiological factors, but trauma, chemicals, infectious (inflammatory) diseases and excessive use of nasal spray are the main reasons.

Nose bleeding, nasal crusting, nasal congestion, pain and whistling breathing are the most common symptoms found in patients. 15% of patients do not have any complaints or even some are unaware of the situation, and treatment is not required in these patients. Many surgical techniques have been described in the repair of septal perforation. However, overall surgical success rates have been reported as low. In the surgical technique that I apply, we take the membrane of the muscle there through the incision made on the upper outer leg part of the patient and sew it to the area with the hole in the nose. We do not make any additional incisions to the nose as we perform the procedures inside the nose with endoscopy. In this method, the success rate can reach 90 percent. After the operation, we remove the tampons that we put into the nose, after 7-10 days. After the operation, the patient washes the nose and keeps the inside moist using moisturizing nose drops.
