How do fillers and botulinum toxin differ?
Fillers may be used to support volume in the lips or selected facial areas and soften some contour irregularities. Hyaluronic acid is one option; no single product is suitable for every area.
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces nerve signals to targeted muscles to soften lines associated with facial movement. It does not add volume, and filler does not stop muscle movement. The treatments are not interchangeable.
What is assessed before treatment?
Assessment considers the face at rest and during expression, skin characteristics, previous operations and earlier injections. The consultation explores whether the intended change is achievable with injections and discusses alternatives.
Tell the doctor about allergies, medicines and supplements, bleeding problems, neuromuscular conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Infection at the proposed injection site may require treatment to be postponed. Do not stop prescribed medicines without medical advice.
How are the injections performed?
After the skin is cleaned, the selected product is injected at points chosen for the treatment and facial anatomy. Local numbing may be appropriate for filler, depending on the area and product. Appointment length varies with the extent of treatment.
The product name, treated areas, expected effect, follow-up arrangements and possible complications should be discussed beforehand. Injections should be performed in an appropriate medical setting by a doctor trained in these procedures.
What matters during early recovery?
Tenderness, redness, swelling or bruising can occur at injection sites. Return to activities and the time for the appearance to settle vary. Allow for these possibilities when considering treatment before an important event.
Avoid rubbing or massaging the area unless specifically advised by the doctor. Follow instructions tailored to the product and area for exercise, heat exposure, make-up and skincare. Report unexpected or worsening symptoms to the treating team.
When can the effect be assessed, and how long does it last?
An initial change from filler may be visible early, but swelling can affect its appearance. Duration depends on the material, injection site and individual factors. One duration cannot be applied to all fillers.
Botulinum toxin usually starts to show an effect over several days and often gradually wears off over 3–4 months. Review and any further treatment are planned after assessment. Both the effect and its duration vary between individuals.
What are the risks and signs requiring urgent care?
Fillers can cause asymmetry, palpable irregularities, infection or allergic reactions. Rare but serious complications include a blocked blood vessel causing tissue injury or loss of vision. Unusual sudden or increasing pain, pale or dusky skin, or any visual change requires immediate medical assessment.
Botulinum toxin can cause headache, temporary eyelid drooping or unwanted facial weakness. Difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking, or widespread muscle weakness requires emergency medical help without delay. These symptoms can develop hours to weeks after injections.
Results of any surgical or interventional procedure may vary from person to person.

Frequently asked questions
Are fillers and botulinum toxin the same treatment?
No. Fillers add volume, while botulinum toxin temporarily reduces movement in selected muscles. Assessment determines which approach, if any, is appropriate.
Can the two treatments be combined?
They may be considered together for different areas or concerns in selected patients. Suitability for the same appointment, product choices, the overall plan and risks should be discussed with the doctor.
Can nose filler replace rhinoplasty?
Filler adds volume to camouflage certain irregularities; it does not make the nose smaller or provide the same changes as surgery. Nasal blood vessels create a risk of serious complications, and treatment is not suitable for everyone.
Are the effects permanent?
Botulinum toxin has a temporary effect. Filler duration depends on the material and area. Fillers should not all be assumed to last the same time or to be easily reversible.
Which symptoms need immediate help?
After filler, visual changes, unusual severe pain or a marked skin colour change require urgent medical assessment. After botulinum toxin, difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking requires emergency medical help.
